Cycling
in New Zealand
New Zealand is a great country to bike in. Low
traffic volumes (particularly the South Island), poor public
transportation and friendly locals make it ideal for cycle touring.
A few quick tips:
* Cycle helmets are compulsory.
* Being an exposed island the weather can be chnage very fast (Warm clothing and raingear is a must, even in summer).
* If coming from overseas make sure your bike and any camping gear (Including boots) have been scrubbed free of dirt.
* Beware of the sun - it burns (Pack strong sunblock).
A book called "Pedaller's Paradise" by Nigel
Rushton is highly recommended. It Informs while still leaving something to
discover. The most
accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive NZ cycling guide books
available. It is what most cyclists use when
touring NZ as it has cyclist specific information.
There are South
Island and a North Island Books.
